Julienest

If you're wandering around Barking and suddenly craving authentic African cuisine served with heart, Julienest is the spot you’ll want to walk into. Tucked right at 15 Broadway, Barking IG11 7LS, this gem of a restaurant doesn’t just serve food-it brings a whole cultural dining experience to the table.

As soon as you enter Julienest, you’ll notice it’s got a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere-perfect for a quick solo lunch, a lively dinner with friends, or even a late-night bite after a long day. With wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating, and toilets, it's built to be inclusive and comfortable for all guests. They’ve even got outdoor seating if you're in the mood to enjoy your meal with a bit of fresh London air.

Now let’s talk food-because that’s where Julienest shines. If you’ve never had the pleasure of eating Tilapia grilled to perfection, you’re in for a treat. It’s crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and typically paired with their famous Fried Yams or Kelewele, which are delightfully spicy fried plantains. Feeling adventurous? Try the Grilled Guineafowl-a lean, flavorful bird that’s not easy to find elsewhere in London.

Julienest also makes sure the West African soul food staples are done right. Their Fufu and Light Soup is a fan favorite, and comes with your choice of protein-goat meat, cheap cuts of meat, or even a solitary okro if you’re keeping it minimal. For something richer, the Omutuo with Peanut Soup hits all the right notes: silky, nutty, and deeply satisfying.

Meat lovers shouldn’t miss out on the Lamb Suya-grilled meat skewers dusted with a spicy peanut-based rub that packs a flavorful punch. And if you're after something truly homey and comforting, the Emo Tuo and Peanut Soup with Black Eyed Beans is a deeply nourishing option that feels like a warm hug.

Pair your meal with something from their great beer selection-Star Beer is a solid choice, or go traditional with a Pot of Palm Wine or Nsaah-Fuo Toddy. If you’re not into alcohol, they also offer Fanta, Coca-Cola, and even coffee if you’re winding down or need a pick-me-up. Their cocktails are no joke either-bold, fun, and perfect for weekend dinners.

While Julienest is known for hearty dishes, they don’t skimp on options for smaller appetites. You’ll find chicken wings, Brussels sprouts, and a Jollof Rice Chicken Salad & Plantain combo that’s just the right size for a light yet satisfying lunch. And if you’re in a hurry, they’ve got quick bites, small plates, and takeaway options ready to go.

Service-wise, Julienest offers it all: dine-in, takeaway, kerbside pickup, and even delivery, making it easy to enjoy their flavors wherever you are. Whether you're stopping by for lunch, settling in for dinner, or grabbing something after hours, this spot is built for flexibility.

Julienest’s charm lies in its blend of authenticity, accessibility, and culinary boldness. It’s not just a restaurant-it’s a bite of West Africa in the heart of Barking, brought to life through generous portions, soulful dishes, and a friendly atmosphere that keeps people coming back.

If you're in London and looking to experience something that’s bold, homey, and unapologetically flavorful, Julienest delivers-with extra spice, a side of suya, and a smile.

Hands down my favourite Ghanaian restaurant in the UK! I have been going to Julienest for years and spent many special occasions here including the meal after my registry wedding. The food is authentic, consistently good flavours, always comes piping hot and comes out quickly (contrary to bad experiences I’ve had at other Ghanaian restaurants). I sometimes treat myself to a takeaway when I can’t be bothered to cook. My go-to’s are Waakye, Banku & Okro soup or Omotuo. Their Akonfem is lovely. Their kebab is also very tender and succulent, but quite spicy. The decor is very nice, Afrocentric and welcoming. They have good music (sometimes a DJ) and sometimes a live band on Fridays and Sundays. Can get very busy and crowded on Sundays.

Takes a while to get your food but when it arrives it’s worth the wait! This is my go to takeaway spot in Barking. If you want to dine in, I highly recommend booking a table on a Friday night as they have live music which creates a vibrant night scene.

We visited Julienest on Friday night, and it was well worth the visit. The atmosphere was great, and the live band added to the experience. Initially, we wanted to try the kelewele and wings, but unfortunately, they weren’t available that evening. Instead, we opted for tsofi, plantain, gizzard, and some pepper on the side. The gizzard and tsofi were delicious, though the plantain was slightly on the hard side.
